Dr. Nagashima received his Medical Degree from the Gunma University School of Medicine in Maebashi, Japan and furthered his education with a Ph. D from the Department of Surgery at the same University. After serving as a Clinical Fellow at several Japanese hospitals, he was selected as a guest researcher to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda Maryland in 1995. Since then, he has progressed to Visiting Fellow and, most recently, to Visiting Associate at the NIH Laboratory of Human Carcinogenesis at the National Cancer Institute. In August, 1999 he received the Federal Technology Transfer Award from the NIH. He has published extensively with particular emphasis on cancer genetics and tumor suppressor genes as well as DNA damage and repair. In addition to continuing his research, Dr. Nagashima is currently practicing as a heart and upper gastro-intestinal tract surgeon in Japan.
